ST. JOSEPH – In an effort to honor and show appreciation for frontline workers during nurses’ week and healthcare week, which take place from May 6 to 16, Spectrum Health Lakeland is hosting a luminary event throughout southwest Michigan.

Community members are encouraged to write the names of the healthcare workers they would like to honor on paper bag, light a candle and place the luminary on their front porch or driveway.

The event will take place in the evening on Tuesday, May 12 in honor of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing, said a Lakeland representative. Lakeland team members will also be lighting luminaries along with the community and placing them outside the three hospitals and the Center for Outpatient Services.

“The outpouring of community support we’ve received on behalf of our healthcare workers has been overwhelming,” said Natalie Baggio, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing executive. “The luminary event is another way we can come together to show our support for those on the front lines during this difficult time.”

Community members are encouraged to take a photo or video with their luminary and share it to social media, tagging Spectrum Health Lakeland, or email to info@lakelandhealth.org.
