BUCHANAN — Fresh and local produce, breads, homemade soaps, jewelry and handcrafted art is back for this year’s Buchanan Farmers Market.

The market officially opened for the season on May 4 and will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday until Oct. 12 outside at the Buchanan Common grounds, which is located at 122 Days Ave. in Buchanan. This year marks the 14th year the market has been in service.

“Opening day was great. We had 26 different vendors with a welcome from the city of Buchanan and Willard G. doing cinnamon rolls and fresh ground coffee for everyone,” said Beth Chubb, market chair for the farmers market. “We had fresh vegetables — lettuce, radishes, asparagus already. [We also had] lots of vendors with original paintings, jewelry and crocheted items.”

Vendors at the market agreed that opening day went well, adding that they are happy to participate in the market.

“Opening day went well. We plan to be there two to three times every month,” said Amanda Hansbro, vendor from 2 Girls with a Glue Gun. “We sell wreaths, signs, hair accessories, organic all-natural clay masks and eye balm, and miscellaneous crafts. … This is my first year but Dahlia [Hansbro’s business partner] has been participating for a few years now. Buchanan is our hometown so that makes it special. We enjoy the sense of community and supporting local businesses.”

The outside market has more than 20 vendors which all have a variety of things for sale. Some of the things for purchase include fresh produce, warm bread and baked goods, jams and jellies, soaps, art, jewelry and crafts.

“Opening weekend was wonderful. Weather was great and we had many new and returning vendors and customers,” said a representative with vendor Stick Spoons Jam, LLC. “Our next weekend present is May 25. We make jams, jellies and maple syrup. Every year, we grow our flavors.”

Chubb said she believes the Buchanan Farmers Market to be a special place that takes pride in its vendors and the products it sells.

“We are very friendly and want everyone to get the best items at the best price,” she said. “Everyone who comes down should expect friendly vendors willing to explain their products and tell you how to use their vegetables. They will also meet their friends and neighbors and can visit while sitting at the picnic tables on the commons. The market has been around for a long time because it provides a need and the community supports it.”

The Buchanan Farmers Market has vendor space available all season at (269) 506-3021 or at buchananfarmersmarket.com.
