BENTON HARBOR — Lake Michigan College Criminal Justice Program is now accepting registration for several new non-credit classes and workshops for law enforcement professionals for the Spring semester.

Courses include:

• Crime Prevention through Environmental Design

The class will meet 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 in the Todd Center, room 1306. Cost is $99.

Participants will gain a working knowledge of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design and develop the skills necessary to become involved in the planning, design and/or development process as it relates to preventing criminal behavior. This class, led by Brian Wedoff, Regional Loss Prevention Manager for Ulta Beauty Salon and Cosmetics, Inc., provides an overview and detailed explanation of how to improve physical security through design, and is relevant for crime prevention officers, corporate security and physical security professionals, city planners, commercial property managers and business owners. • Leadership for Women in Public Safety Organizations

Class will meet 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 29 in the Todd Center, room 1306. Cost is $99.

Designed specifically for women in public safety leadership roles, this course will focus on challenges facing women in a male dominated industry. It will examine various leadership theories and styles, and public and private sector leadership. The course also will examine contemporary and historical female leaders, traditionally “masculine” and “feminine” leadership attributes, practice in using leadership skills in work-centered scenarios, and a complete self-assessment evaluation tool to determine your leadership style. Taught by Cynthia Graffenius, former Emergency Preparedness Instructor for the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant, this class will look at a “problem” within a public safety organization and develop strategies to mitigate the problem, while continuing to develop a strong team relationship with her co-workers. • Workplace Violence Assessment and Response

The class will meet 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11 in the Todd Center, room 1306. Cost is $99.

This class provides a detailed explanation of workplace violence topics. Students will explore the components of current topics, how to classify and respond to all threats in the workplace. The intended audience is crime prevention officers, corporate security/physical security professionals, HR professionals, any business owner with an interest in improving their workplace violence knowledge and response protocols. This class, also taught by Brian Wedoff, will explore the most recent trend of how domestic violence negatively influences the workplace and strategies to prevent this destructive influence. The goal of this advanced course is to provide the participant with a working knowledge of threat mitigation and response and the necessary skills to implement a Crisis Response Model to ensure workplace safety. • Officer Safety and Security in Corrections

Class meets from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11 in the Todd Center, room 1309. Cost is $99.

Designed for corrections officers, this course includes topics such as officer awareness, inmate/new arrestee escorts, headcount/cell check procedures, searches/handcuffing/leg shackles, communication around the inmate, and mental health issues. Taught by Elkhart County Sheriff’s Correctional Officer/Field Training Officer Brian Ludy, this course provides an overall safety and security assessment with tested techniques and procedures to ensure that officer safety is always a priority within a corrections institution. Students will receive a certificate of completion from the Lake Michigan College Criminal Justice Program. • Mass Casualty Response Workshop: Lessons Learned from Orlando and Las Vegas —Understand the Response from the First Responder’s perspective

Class meets from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 17 in the Mendel Center’s Hanson Theatre. Cost is $49.

Experience an insider’s perspective of two of the largest mass casualty shootings in American History:  The Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando., and the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas from Orlando Police Dept. Capt. Douglas Goerke and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept. Capt. Nick Farese at this special event for those whose jobs make them an active part of response. The event will explore and discuss the responses to these two horrific attacks and what was learned during each critical and stressful event – what was done well, what decisions were made, and what lessons were learned. A question and answer session will take place after their presentations. Seating for this event is reserved for law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, trauma center and medical personnel, and all public safety employees.
