CASSOPOLIS — The Cass County Fair Youth Poultry Show took place Thursday morning, with children from all over Michiana participating.

“4-H is awesome, and I think chickens have made a comeback,” said Bridget Russell, a poultry show volunteer. “A lot of people are raising chickens. Chickens have become like pets to most people. I know they are in my house.”

Children of all ages competed in the show, from peewee to senior. There were also variety of classes and competitions for them to participate in. For instance, market chickens were only pitted against other chickens that are of a similar weight. Or children could compete by demonstrating their knowledge of a chicken to a judge.

Eggs were also shown.

“They will show them to the judge, and they will be judged based on how uniform they are,” Russell said.

Other species of poultry shown were ducks, turkey, geese, pigeons and quail.
