Portage Northern takes pair

NILES — Visiting Portage Northern swept a SMAC West Division doubleheader from Niles Tuesday.

The Huskies won the wild first game 25-17, and then completed the sweep, with a 9-7 win in the nightcap.

Lexie Coon was clutch at the plate with runners on base on Tuesday, driving in four on three hits to lead the Huskies to the sweep. Coon drove in runs on a home run in the first and a single in the fourth.

Both offenses were strong as Portage Northern collected 23 hits and Niles 16 in the high-scoring affair

In the first inning, the Huskies got their offense started when Jessie Beadle singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Portage Northern took the lead for good with 10 runs in the fourth inning.

Beadle, Taylor Lyke, Coon, Jillian Bowe and Lizzy Verduzco all singled and drove in runs, while Hannah Biddlecome doubled to drive in three runs.

Portage Northern also scored on a while pitch.

Deborah Torres was credited with the victory for the Huskies. She surrendered 17 runs on 14 hits over five innings, striking out five. Verduzco threw two innings in relief.

Brooke Timm took the loss for Niles. She surrendered 21 runs on 19 hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four.

Niles smashed five home runs on the day. Taylor Altergott had a dinger in the third inning. Caitlin Daly had a home run in the first and third innings. Hannah Albright had a homer in the third and fourth innings.

Portage Northern tallied 23 hits. Erin Sexsmith, Coon, Beadle, Biddlecome, Lyke, Bowe, Verduzco and Torres all collected multiple hits. Sexsmith went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Portage Northern Huskies Varsity in hits.

Niles saw the ball well today, racking up 16 hits in the game. Daly, Timm, Addison Davies, Albright and Sadie Fountain all finished with multiple hits for Niles. Daly led Niles with five hits in five at bats.

In the second game, Portage Northern jumped out to a six-run lead in the seventh inning and held on for a 9-7 victory.

Niles scored four runs in the comeback effort on a double by Timm, a double by Daly, a double by Albright and a single by Myer.

Portage Northern notched five runs in the third inning. Beadle, Lyke, Coon and Sexsmith all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

Verduzco got the win. She allowed 11 hits and seven runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.

Portage Northern racked up 17 hits. Beadle, Jillian Bowe, Coon, Biddlecome and Sarah Budnick all collected multiple hits for Portage Northern Huskies Varsity. Beadle went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Portage Northern Huskies Varsity in hits.

Niles finished with 11 hits in the game. Albright, Daly, Timm and Davies all had multiple hits. Albright led the Vikings with a 3-for-4 performance.
