DOWAGIAC — Dowagiac officials are asking residents to “Spring in-to Your Local Library” with a One Story adventure. 

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, the Dowagiac District Library will host a multigenerational scavenger hunt.

Kids of all ages may choose one of their favorite adults, be it a grandparent, parent, teacher or otherwise, to team up on a quest through downtown Dowagiac.

Pre-registration is highly suggested as participation is limited, organizers said. Registration is open until May 1. Everyone who preregisters will also be entered in a raffle for a special extra prize.

Teams will begin at the Dowagiac District Library where they will receive a scavenger hunt passport and a map of clues.  The hunt will take them through the downtown area seeking the answers to fill their passport with stamps from area merchants and organizations. Upon filling their hunt passport, teams will return to the library to receive a prize package.

For those unable to participate in the hunt, there will be a painted rock hunt across the wider city area.  Anyone finding a rock with the One Story tree logo on it may return it to the Dowagiac District Library for a family prize.

The “One Story” program is a unique, volunteer-based program that unites the community through reading and sharing personal experiences. “One Story” is fostered by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, the City of Dowagiac, Dowagiac Area History Museum, Dowagiac District Library, Dowagiac Union Schools, Ferris State University Southwest Region, and Southwestern Michigan College. 

In the program’s fifth year, the theme of One Story 2018 is connecting generations, and the featured book is “Tuesdays with Morrie,” by Mitch Albom.  The author shares the story of how reconnecting with his elderly, former, professor blessed him with valuable lessons about life and relationships and even helped him redefine his definition of success.  This year also features a supplementary youth picture book: “Effie’s Image” by N.L. Sharp.  Eighty-two-year-old Effie Armstrong finds renewed purpose and joy in life due to the wisdom and guidance of her young neighbor.
