Daniel Smith passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at the age of 62.

He was born Dec. 8, 1955, to Robin and Carol (Deming) Smith in Three Rivers, Michigan.

On July 17, 1976, he married his high school sweetheart, Debbie Wanko, on the grounds of the family farm in Cassopolis.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Debbie; two sons, Lucas (Katrina) Smith and Jacob (Wendy) Smith of Hudsonville and 6 grandchildren.

He is also survived by his mother, Carol, of Coloma; two brothers, Mike (Beverly) Smith and Tim (Jill) Smith of Cassopolis; his sister, Sally (Jamie) Stone of Coloma and sister-in-law Diann Vonwanko of Brownsboro, Texas, in addition to many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Robin, mother-in-law Judy (Bob) Hayes and brother-in-law Danny Wanko. Professionally, Dan and his wife were local restaurateurs who spent more than 20 years as co-owners of The Establishment in Benton Harbor.

They then turned their focus to managing the St. Joseph River Yacht Club for another 12 years where they were largely responsible for the Club’s success over the same period.

He was an avid traveler and birding enthusiast who enjoyed exploring Costa Rica and cruising the Caribbean with his family.

He also loved spending time at the family’s lake house, teaching his grandchildren to fish and cheering for his favorite sports teams.

He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
