It was at least a super finish

made the mistake of checking my ESPN app on my phone around 10 p.m. Sunday.

When I saw that the New England Patriots were leading the Philadelphia Eagles 33-32 late in the fourth quarter, I knew in my heart of hearts that Tom Brady had done it again.

Then I noticed that the app said the Eagles had the ball third-and-one around the 30 yard line with less than three minutes to go.

I could not help myself. Despite saying I was not going to watch the game, I had to turn it on for the first time all night to see of the Eagle were going to pull of the upset.

The were reviewing a touchdown that put the Eagles up 38-33 with 2:21 to play following the missed two-point conversion.

I immediately got a sinking feeling because Brady was about to get the ball back with one timeout and the two-minute warning to go. Plenty of time for “Comeback Tom” to lead the Patriots to another Super Bowl championship.

In a game that apparently featured no defense, another University of Michigan standout, Brandon Graham of the Eagles forced Brady to fumble the football on the only sack of the game.

Philadelphia had the ball and a chance to put the game away with a touchdown.

They could not.

The Eagles trotted out rookie field goal kicker who drilled his third field goal of the game to make it 41-33.

New England still had life as a touchdown and a two-point conversion would send the game to overtime.

Brady and the Patriots nearly did it again as on the game’s final play, a Hail Mary, the ball bounced up in the air in the end zone and the Patriots nearly got their hands on it.

It was not meant to be, apparently, as the Eagles provided the City of Brotherly Love with its first Super Bowl championship.

I could not be more happy to see the Eagles win their first title.

As I wrote in a previous column, I am tired of seeing the Patriots win year after year.

Sunday night, my wish came true and Philadelphia was dancing in the streets.
