Dowagiac boys top Otsego, girls fall to Bulldogs

OTSEGO — Visiting Dowagiac exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull out a 66-60 Wolverine Conference non-divisional boys basketball victory over Otsego Friday night.

The Chieftains (1-1) led just 46-43 heading into the final eight minutes of play, but outscored the Bulldogs (1-1) 20-17 to pick up their first win of the season.

Dowagiac led at every quarter break as it held a 20-18 advantage after one quarter and a 34-29 lead at the intermission.

Caleb Murphy led the Chieftains with a game-high 20 points, while Trae Brookins added 11 and Jamin Hunt five.

J.J. Smith and Logan Thies both chipped in with four points.

Addison Atwater had 13 points to pace the Bulldogs.

The Chieftains will travel to Plainwell for another non-divisional Wolverine Conference contest this week.

Otsego 67, Dowagiac 34

The two-game winning streak of the Dowagiac girls basketball team came to a screeching halt as visiting Otsego outscored the Chieftains 42-18 in the first half and never looked back in a 67-34 Wolverine Conference non-divisional victory Friday night.

The Bulldogs (3-1) raced out to a 26-12 first quarter advantage.

It would take the Chieftains (2-2) three quarters to score 26 points.

Otsego took a 56-26 advantage into the final quarter.

Amiyah Smith scored 13 points to lead Dowagiac, which also got nine points from Allie Conner.

Grace Verhage led all scorers with 15 points for the Bulldogs.
