Edwardsburg hands Buchanan first loss

Visiting Edwardsburg snapped Buchanan’s 11-game winning streak with a 57-39 non-league victory in girls basketball Tuesday night.

The previously undefeated Bucks (11-1) were outscored 29-14 in the first half and were never able to recover.

Savannah Dixon drained a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Eddies (10-2) get off to a fast start.

Kaitlyn Zarycki picked up the scoring in the second quarter as she scored nine of her 17 points.

Edwardsburg was able to hold off the Bucks in the final quarter by hitting 6-of-8 free throws, including 6-of-7 by Dixon, who led all scorers with 19 points.

Buchanan, who was led by Brooke Wesner’s 13 points, trailed the Eddies 43-31 entering the fourth quarter.

Jayla Bibbs added 12 points for the Bucks.

Brayden Curtis scored 10 points for the Eddies, who travel to Dowagiac Friday night for a Wolverine Conference South Division contest.

 

Niles at Battle Creek Central

BATTLE CREEK — Visiting Niles improved to 4-9 with a 54-40 win over Battle Creek Central in SMAC non-divisional girls basketball Tuesday night.

The Vikings grabbed a 15-10 first quarter lead and stretched it to 29-17 by halftime.

Niles took a 44-29 lead into the final eight minutes.

Emma Applegate led Niles and all scorers with 17 points, while Jaycee Myer added 10 points and Alycia Patterson nine.

The Vikings host Portage Northern at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

 

Brandywine at New Buffalo

NEW BUFFALO — The Brandywine boys basketball team ran its undefeated record to 13-0 with a 59-53 victory over host New Buffalo in BCS Athletic Conference non-divisional contest Tuesday.

The Bobcats led by eight points at halftime, 32-24, but were outscored by the Bison 19-14 to cut the Brandywine lead to 46-43 heading to the fourth quarter.

Hunter Slaughter led the Bobcats with 21 points, while Brandywine also got 18 points from Vinny Peel and 11 points from Brady Duval.

Seth Margaritis grabbed top scoring honors with 26 points for New Buffalo. Creo Brewster finished with 11 points.
