The Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce is inviting businesses, community organizations and others to appear in the Dowagiac Candlelight Christmas Parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4.

The Dowagiac Christmas parade, which traditionally includes 100 parade units, is one of southwestern Michigan’s largest holiday parades, and is an event that all ages look forward to, as Dowagiac’s downtown sidewalks are literally lined, shoulder to shoulder, with hundreds of spectators.

The parade will step off at 7 p.m. on the corner of Main and Front streets, with line-up beginning at 6 p.m.

According to Vickie Phillipson, event co-chairman, parade entries are encouraged to use lighting on their floats, creating a “parade of lights.” People walking alongside floats or riding in horse-drawn buggies should also consider holding candles or battery-operated candles. To make this a truly magical evening for all to enjoy, entrants are encouraged to use their imagination, and lots and lots of tiny white lights!

Phillipson said entry into the parade is free of charge to the public, all organizations and businesses.

“Our only requirement is for parade units to be decorated in some fashion for the holidays,” she said.

For people wanting to rent a costume, Phillipson said Taylor Rental in Benton Harbor and Everybody’s Everything in St. Joseph are two good sources.

The Chamber will supply a Santa, Town Crier and its own version of Frosty the Snowman. Phillipson said because they do not want to confuse children, no other “live” Santas will be allowed in the parade.

Due to the popularity of this event and the increasing number of units, the deadline for parade entries is Friday, Nov. 6. The Chamber can no longer accept late entries. Registration forms should be returned to the Chamber of Commerce office or can be emailed to vphillipson@Dowagiac.org.

A week prior to the event, participants will receive line-up materials.
