Brandywine picked up a stunning 3-2 boys soccer win Thursday against Granger Christian.Trailing 2-0, the Bobcats got a hat trick from Brady Duval over the final 8:44 and claimed a non-conference victory.

“That was crazy,” Brandywine boys soccer coach Evan Winkler said. “I felt things finally came together for us at the very end.”

Duval scored the game-winning goal with 2:53 left in the contest. The shot came from five yards.
Brandywine was outplayed for most of the second half as Granger Christian went on an 11-0 run with shots after the

Bobcats connected on the first two shots in the second half. On those 11 kicks, Granger Christian got a goal from Joe Oppman and a score from Drew Rademaker.

Brandywine’s final three shots in the second half were goals from Duval. Duval’s second goal with 4:16 left in the game tied the contest at 2.

“In the second half, I felt for awhile we weren’t getting anything,” Winkler said. “They were really pressing us a lot. We went to three forwards because they had so many people back. Brady then could just play the middle and my other center-mids could play up against their outside defenders. I think that helped us a little bit with our offense.”

Granger Christian finished with a 24-11 edge on shots.

“I felt like we had pressure against them in the game,” Winkler said. “We had a couple of bad touches that were too far in front of us or we kicked the ball over or we just missed the goal. The ball just wasn’t going in.”

Brandywine goalie Aleksandr Horvath kept his team in the game. He finished with six saves in the first half and had five saves in the second.

“He had some really good saves,” Winkler said. “He’s improved and worked really hard in practice. He’s gotten a lot better since the beginning of the year. He never played goalie before this year. He’s got good leadership back there too. He tells people where to go and that’s a lot to ask for from a keeper in his first year.”
