I could use a little help this year

Before you know it, the 2015-16 high school sports season will be upon us.

In fact, fall sports practice is set to begin Aug. 10.

So although it is only mid-July, I am already looking ahead at how we will cover high school sports for the coming year.

Each year here at Leader Publications we try to put together a coverage plan that will improve on the previous year.

Are we always sucsessful? I will leave that up to the readers.

But our intention is to always improve — from opening day through the final game of the season.

We try to provide our readers with the best and most up-to-date information about the local sports teams through our print edition, online products and through social media.

With that in mind, I will be hosting, along with Ambrosia Neldon, our managing editor, and Michael Caldwell, our publisher, an open meeting on Tuesday for prospective sportswriters and photographers.

I have a small, but talented team of stringers currently who do a great job.

But if we are to improve our coverage, we need to have a few more good men or women to help us this coming year.

The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Leader Publications office located at 217 N. Fourth Street in Niles.

Anyone who is interested in attending this meeting should do so.

If you cannot make it, but still want to apply, contact me at 687-7702 or by email at scott.novak@leaderpub.com.

We will discuss what will be expected of writers and photographers. We will also go over compensation at the meeting.

We currently cover Brandywine, Cassopolis, Dowagiac Edwardsburg and Niles on a regular basis, as well as Buchanan from time to time.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone who shows up and hopefully you can help us put our plan into action beginning this fall.
