The Niles softball team swept Benton Harbor as it opened up SMAC West Division play Thursday at Vella Park.

The Vikings (3-1, 2-0 West) defeated the Tigers 15-0 and 17-1. Both games lasted just three innings.

“We continue to start slow offensively, which is a concern,” Niles coach Rick McKeel said. “Overall, I was pleased with our hitting. We need to continue that as we move into the more challenging part of our schedule.”

Megan McKeel, Madison Schneider and Taylor Gibson all doubled for Niles in the first game.

Addison Davies pitched a perfect game with three strikeouts and no walks.

In the nightcap, Taylor Gibson homered for Niles, which also got doubles from McKeel, Morgan Altergott and Sandie Fountain.

Michelle Crouch tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts.

Niles will compete in the Chieftain Invitational in Dowagiac Saturday. The Vikings face the host Chieftains in the first game at 10 a.m.
