Niles’ most colorful fundraiser is back.

On Saturday, April 18, the Niles Service League will hold its second annual Colors For Kids 5K Fun Run at Brandywine High School’s cross country track.

The event, which is open to people of all ages, raises money for scholarships and camperships for students in the Brandywine, Buchanan and Niles School Districts.

Around $6,000 was collected after expenses last year, according to Service League member Lisa Wolff-Murdock.

“We would love to make that much or more this year,” said Wolff-Murdock. “We’d love to have over 200 runners or walkers and continue to watch it grow each year.”

People can pre-register online (nilesserviceleague.yolasite.com/5k.php) or on the day of the event.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. and a Zumba (dance aerobics) warm-up will begin at 8 a.m.

The fun run starts at 9 a.m.

Cost is $30 per person.

An early check in will also be available from 4 to 8 p.m. April 17 at Edward Jones, 213 E. Main St., Niles.

Participants will get a free T-shirt although the T-shirt is not guaranteed for people who register the day of the event.

Wolff-Murdock said this year’s run would feature a less confusing course layout and more stations at which runners/walkers will get doused with color.

“People can expect to get more saturated with color,” she said.

Around 130 people participated in last year’s run.

The Niles Service League has provided services in the Brandywine, Buchanan and Niles areas since 1934. Members work with area schools to identify children with clothing and special needs. The Niles Service League also assists with Christmas families, camperships, college scholarships and more.

“The children of our community are our future,” Wolff-Murdock said. “I feel that if we don’t support them and if we don’t invest in them then our future might not look quite as bright.”
