What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library will offer the following free events and activities this week. A library card is not needed to participate in any of our programs. Monday, March 9

• 4 p.m. — Friends of the Library Board Meeting

Do you love the library? Come see what the Friends board does to support the mission. New friends members are always welcome.

 

Tuesday, March 10

• 9:30 a.m. — Special Edition: Craft Day

Gateway Services will have a craft project ready, and Laurie from the YMCA will lead everyone in an adapted Zumba dance. All ages and abilities are welcome in this very family-friendly and accessible group.

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

Apply for assistance when housing is threatened, or just stop in for referrals and information on the second and third Monday of every month.

• 4:30 to 8 p.m. — VITA (tax prep assistance) program

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a service available to households that made $52,000 or less in 2014. Call 211 to schedule an appointment.

• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

Family storytime with crafts, songs, and coloring pages. Feel free to wear jammies.

• 6:30 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies

One of our most popular book clubs- because who doesn’t like a good potluck? Read the book, bring food inspired by it, and join everyone to eat and discuss on the second Tuesday of every month. This month’s title is, “Cotton Tenants: Three Families,” by James Agee. Books are available at the Information Desk.

 

Wednesday, March 11

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., Storytime at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Squigglers (3-5 years) at 11 a.m.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — New Tech: Travelling through the Ethnosphere

New Tech students will be here sharing information about cultures around the world.

 

Thursday, March 12

• 10:30 a.m and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 1 to 4 p.m. — American Mahjong

• 4 p.m. — Teen Book Club: Gods of Manhattan

• 4 to 6 p.m. — Teen Craft Day

• 6 p.m. — What Parents Need to Know About Mental Health and Education

Margo from the Michigan Alliance For Families will be here to inform people on Mental Health and Education.

The library will show a movie in an adjacent room for children not interested in the workshop.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Knitting group

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Niles/Brandywine High School Art Show Reception

 

Friday, March 13

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches (drop-in knitting group)

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)

The SCA is a practical history society, recreating the arts and skills of pre-17th century Europe. This particular weekly gathering is a ‘practice’, and everyone is welcome.

 

Saturday, March 14

• 10:30 a.m. — Toddler Dance Party

• 1 p.m. — Jr. Garden Club

This month guests will learn about carnivorous plants!

• 1 to 5 p.m. — Family Game Day

Come help us break in the Xbox One! The library also has other game systems, table games, card games, and RPGs.

• 6 p.m. — Cult Classics Afterhours

Each month we choose a movie that just more fun to watch with others who have also memorized the lines. This month we’re watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Anyone under 17 has to have a parent with them.
