For the first time in school history, Brandywine is sending a girls team to the state bowling finals this weekend in Lansing.

The Bobcats qualified both the girls and boys teams for the state tournament, which will be held today and Saturday at Royal Scot Bowling Alley.

The team competition will be held today, with the individual state finals being held Saturday.

“This is my first year coaching,” Brandywine’s Pepper Carter said. “To have both teams qualify was a great accomplishment. I could not have done it without my coaching staff — Herb Tittle, Jeff Miller and Tim Phillips. Our kids have put a lot of hard work in this year and I believe we have a great chance of doing well at state.”

The Bobcat boys team, which was 9-1 in the regular season and finished second in the Southern Lake Michigan Bowling Conference, finished second at last weekend’s Division 4 Regional at Northway Lanes in Muskegon.

Ravenna won the team championship with 3,671 pins, while Brandywine was second with 3,626 and Morley Stanwood third with 3,547.

Individually, freshman Matt Probst finished third with 1,152 pins, senior Jakob Szilagyi tied for fourth with 1,147 pins and freshman Derek Lloyd was seventh with 1,128 pins.

Probst, Szilagyi and Lloyd will also compete for an individual state title.

Also competing for the Bobcats at the regional were junior Michael Okayama (1,058 pins), senior Dominic Stella (1,021 pins), senior Blake Lerner (979 pins) and junior Wyatt Eager.

The Brandywine girls team, which was 7-3 during the regular season and also placed second in the Southern Lake Michigan Bowling Conference, finished third at the regional with 2,791 pins.

Ravenna was the regional champion with 3,051 pins and Schoolcraft second with 2,877.

Brandywine senior Holley Martyniuk was fourth individually with 949 pins. She will compete for an individual state championship.

Also competing for the girls team were junior Kori Bunch (819 pins), junior Makayla Dierickx (744 pins), freshman Rebecca Collins (716 pins), junior Skye Critchlow (705 pins) and senior Jessica Stover (678 pins).
