Adopt a Niles fire hydrant

In an effort to brighten up neighborhoods, the City of Niles is asking residents to adopt a fire hydrant this fall.

The city has more than 700 fire hydrants and many of them are in need of a fresh coat of paint due to years of exposure to the sun and the elements.

With an ever-tightening budget, the city does not have the funds to pay contractors to paint the hydrants.

Niles residents are being asked to help paint the fire hydrants around the city.

That’s why the city is asking for its residents to help out.

To make the process as easy as possible, the city will provide paint kits to any resident who wants to adopt of fire hydrant or multiple hydrants.

The kit will include a brush, gloves, directions and yellow paint.

All residents need to provide is their time.

“Programs like this have had great success in many communities,” said Jeff Dunlap, Niles Utilities Director.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends painting fire hydrants in a chrome yellow color to provide maximum visibility in any weather conditions, day or night.

NCP Coatings of Niles is providing all of the paint for the project at no cost.

“We are very grateful that NCP Coatings is donating the paint,” said Dan Tackett, of the Niles City Fire Department. “It will help us keep the fire hydrants in good use and make them look better for the community.”

Chief Larry Lamb, of the Niles City Fire Department, said he hopes that youth groups, churches and neighborhood associations will get involved in the program.

Paint kits are available for pickup at the Niles Fire Department, located at 1345 E. Main St. Residents with questions can call (269) 683-2374.
