A Buchanan resident whose dogs escaped and killed two animals earlier this month has agreed to have one of the dogs destroyed.

The owner of the dogs, Sade Blackwell, appeared in Berrien County Trial Court in Niles Tuesday afternoon and told Judge Dennis Wiley she would not contest a motion by the prosecutor’s office to have the remaining pet put down.

Mark Sanford, assistant county prosecutor, said his office in return would dismiss the three charges made against Blackwell.

Blackwell was issued two tickets for having a dog at large and one ticket for having a dog without a license.

The two dogs, described by police as pitbulls, got loose on Saturday Aug. 2 in Buchanan and killed a cat and a dog.

One of the dogs that got loose was eventually shot and killed by a Buchanan Police officer after the dog ran at the officer, according to a Buchanan Police report.

The other dog, named “Specks,” was secured by authorities and returned to Blackwell.

Blackwell told Wiley Tuesday that she was not in position of the dog and that it was in custody.
