One woman is dead and four others are injured following a two-car traffic accident in Howard Township Saturday night, according to Cass County Sheriff Joseph Underwood.

Underwood said a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Austin Brouwer, of Osceola, Indiana, was traveling northbound on M-60 Highway at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass a vehicle on the dirt portion of the highway and lost control of his vehicle. Once his vehicle was back on the paved portion of the roadway, he hit another vehicle driven by Douglas Irving, 32, of Niles.

Brouwer’s vehicle was then pushed into the grass median where it flipped several times.

Brouwer sustained injuries at the scene and was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. He is listed in serious but stable condition.

Two other passengers in the vehicle were injured and another was killed, according to the report released by the sheriff’s department.

A backseat passenger, Rayna Dobrodt, 23, of Mishawaka, was transported to Lakeland-Niles Hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The front seat passenger, Janet Menting, 21, of South Bend, was air lifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She is listed in critical condition.

Backseat passenger Scott Voresis, 21, of South Bend, was transported to Lakeland-Niles, where he was treated and released for his injuries.

Douglas Irving, the driver of the other vehicle, was transported to Lakeland-Niles, where he was treated and released.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and safety belts were used.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the crash and asks anyone with further information to contact them.

The deputies were assisted at the scene by the Howard Township Fire Department, Niles Michigan State Police, SMCAS Ambulance Service, Life Care Ambulance Service and Air Care.
