Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan school boards will all have several seats up for grabs in the upcoming General Election.

The deadline for applying to run is before 4 p.m. July 22. Paperwork must be filed with the Berrien County Clerk’s office, 811 Port St., St. Joseph, by that deadline.

At Niles, three six-year terms and one two-year term is up for vote Nov. 4. The three six-year terms are currently occupied by Jeff Curry, Greg O’Toole and Mark Wortham. The two-year term is to fill the vacancy left when Michael Waldron resigned. Brent Wright was appointed to fill Waldron’s seat.

At Brandywine, four seats will be available. The four-year seats are currently held by Dennis Hinsey, Doris Schoenleber, Mike Shelton and Jim Curran.

In Buchanan, three seats will become open. They are held by Sandy Tobler, Jim DeVlaminck and Dennis Wentworth. Terms are six years.

Candidates seeking a school board position must file a petition containing a certain number of signatures or pay a $100 nonrefundable fee to the county clerk’s office.

Niles candidates will need a minimum of 40 signatures (100 maximum), while Brandywine and Buchanan candidates need a minimum of six signatures (20 maximum). No registration fee is needed if a petition is filed.

Niles Supt. Michael Lindley advised candidates to review the laws regarding signature collection, including that one person can file a maximum of four petitions.

Forms are available at local school offices or at the office of the county clerk.
