One dead, another injured in Niles Township accident

A 21-year-old Galien resident is dead and a 27-year-old Buchanan resident was injured after a semi-truck crashed into a vehicle Monday evening in Niles Township.

The names of those involved are not being released until family members are notified.

According to a news release, Michigan State Police responded to an accident at US-12 and Third Street in Niles Township at 6:47 p.m.

An investigation revealed that a fully loaded semi-truck traveling west on US-12 crashed into a vehicle stopped in front of it at the traffic light.

The occupants of the vehicle were a 21-year-old Galien resident and a 27-year-old Buchanan resident. Both were stabilized at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Niles and transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

The driver of the stopped vehicle was declared dead at South Bend Memorial Hospital, while the passenger was listed in stable condition.

The semi-driver, from Minnesota, sustained no injuries.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department and Niles Township Fire Department. The accident remains under investigation.
