Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. who is Michigan’s longest serving senator will be attending a meet and greet at the Cass County Democratic Headquarters at 7:30 a.m. ob Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The public is invited to attend and thank Sen. Levin for his many years of service at the headquarters located at 804 E. State St., which is near Family Dollar.

As a Harvard Law School graduate, Levin was elected to the Detroit City Council in 1964 and elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978 where he has served six terms. Levin has served on the Armed Services Committee since 2003 and as chairman since 2007.

In 2003, he opposed the resolution giving congressional authorization for the invasion of Iraq and offered and alternative resolution that would have given time for weapons inspectors to do their work.

He is chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where he has led investigations into such issues as the 2008 financial crisis and abusive credit card practices.

Another of his signature issues has been his involvement in protecting Michigan’s diverse natural environment and Great Lakes. He serves as co-chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force.

Levin will retire at the end of his term next January and has endorsed Congressman Gary Peters for Michigan’s Senate seat.
