Last year’s Making A Difference Day in Buchanan was such as success, organizers are bringing it back for a second day of giving back.

“Last year we had about 28 volunteers and around 70 volunteer hours,” said Doris Higgins, volunteer with Buchanan First United Methodist Church, which is coordinating the event along with Buchanan Community Schools and the City of Buchanan.

“This year we’d like to see at least 40 people participate.”

The second annual Making A Difference Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Volunteers should meet at Buchanan City Hall, 302 N. Redbud Trail.

Three projects will be tackled.

Volunteers will plant 75 Heritage trees along the McCoy Creek Watershed. These trees will protect the local water supply and keep the creek flowing. Higgins said a majority of the trees were donated to the city.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to do some fall landscaping clean up at Ottawa Elementary, or a painting project at the school farm.

Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring work gloves/tools in case extras are needed.

Higgins said all are invited to attend, not just people in Buchanan.

“It is for anyone who is interested in helping the environment and making a difference,” she said. “Our hope is that once you get out here you will catch the bug and keep it going.”

Registration is not required, but is appreciated.
