Dowagiac Public Safety Director Steven Grinnewald reports that the suspect arrested for home invasion on Sept. 2 by the Dowagiac Police Department was arraigned Tuesday in Cass County Fourth District Court in Cassopolis.

He identified the suspect as 28-year-old Maria Milam.

Milam was arraigned on charges of first-degree home invasion, domestic assault and driving while license suspended.

Milam is being held at the Cass County Jail on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

Milam and the adult victim are believed to be the biological parents of the child taken out of the house in the incident, however, the two adults do not live together. The child was not harmed.

Grinnewald earlier reported that on Monday about 10 p.m., officers from the Dowagiac Police Department were dispatched to a 911 call in the 500 block of Hill Street regarding a subject who forced her way into a residence.

Once inside, the suspect assaulted the caller, 29, and left with a small child, fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

Police located the suspect vehicle on Colby Street, near Dewey Street, and conducted a traffic stop and determined she was a Lawton resident.

The victim, a 29-year-old male Dowagiac resident, was not harmed.

Investigation continues. Grinnewald asks anyone with information to contact the Dowagiac Police Department at (269) 782-9743 or the Cass County tip line at (800) 462-9328.
