Domestic violence suspect faces other charges

A 27-year-old local man Dowagiac Police Department arrested for pointing a handgun at his girlfriend faces numerous other charges.

Dowagiac Public Safety Director Steven Grinnewald reports the man, identified as Quantrell Duan Mallett, was arraigned in Cass County Fourth District Court in Cassopolis on charges of assault by strangulation, domestic assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and marijuana possession.

Mallett was being held on a $60,000 cash or surety bond.

Police took the complaint at 4:35 p.m. Aug. 12. Though there were minor injuries from the alleged domestic assault, the victim was not physically injured by the gun in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Officers, assisted by the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team, attempted to locate the suspect at different residences in the 200 block of James and the 300 block of Oak streets. Officers then received information the suspect had just been seen near Parkside Apartments in the 400 block of East Railroad Street.

Police proceeded to Parkside, where the suspect was located coming out of an apartment and apprehended.

Officers recovered a loaded handgun hidden inside the apartment. This handgun matched the description as the one used in the felonious assault. Marijuana was also located within the apartment. Investigation revealed the suspect had delivered marijuana to other individuals. The victim was not physically injured and the incident remains under investigation.
