Dowagiac Board of Education June 17 recognized middle school substitute custodian Jennifer Grindstaff and Principal Matt Severin as “Chieftain heroes” for their quick reactions when a former student brought a gun to the middle school June 3.

“We had a tragic situation which could have been, in our opinion, even more tragic,” Supt. Dr. Mark Daniel said. “They acted immediately and appropriately. Our hearts go out to the family, but we also appreciate what you folks did. I’m very pleased and proud at the way everyone worked so well together.”

President Michelle Helmuth-Charles or board member Larry Schmidt will attend a June 27 meeting to discuss with city and Pokagon Township officials extending another access road to DMS.
