SOUTH BEND – Benet Academy scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings to edge Dowagiac 6-3 in baeball action at Coveleski Stadium Saturday night.

The Chieftains led 1-0 after one inning thanks to a Cal Cox RBI triple. Cole Wiker, who was hit by a pitch with one out, scored the run.

Dowagiac’s other two runs came in the sixth on an RBI by Cox and a sacrifice fly by Garrett Stark.

Cox also worked the first three innings, striking out three and not allowing a hit.

Wiker took the loss despite allowing just two hits over the final three innings.

“Cal was the leader,” Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said. “He set the tone for the game with his pitching as well as driving in our first two runs with big hits. Cole did a great job when he came in.”

Dowagiac played without starter Dean Klann, who injured his ankle Friday night against Berrien Springs, and then lost Matt Smith in the third inning when he sustained an ankle injury.

Benet Academy is coached by former Dowagiac Athletic Director Scott Lawler.
