Dump truck crash kills Berrien County woman

One person is dead after a two-car accident involving a dump truck late Wednesday morning in Berrien County.

According to the Michigan State Police, a St. Joseph City Department of Public Works dump truck was traveling north on Lakeshore Drive in St. Joseph Township around 11:15 a.m. As the truck approached the intersection of Shoreham Drive, a vehicle pulled into the path of the truck.

The truck driver was unable to avoid the car as it entered the roadway. The impact sent the 2009 Mercury Sable off the road. The driver of the vehicle was trapped and had to be extricated by MSP Troopers and St. Joseph City Public Safety officers.

The driver of the Mercury, Janet Unruh, 77, of St. Joseph, was transported to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph where she was pronounced dead. Her passenger, Dixie Kreiger, 88, of St. Joseph, was transported to Lakeland with non-life threatening injuries.
