An Edwardsburg man said the sun blinded him when he ran a stop sign and crashed into the vehicle of a Niles woman Tuesday morning in Milton Township.

David Cooper, 51, of Edwardsburg, and Florence Szymborski, 65, of Niles, were both treated by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service. Szymborski was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for further treatment.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:07 a.m. at the intersection of Redfield Street and Brush Road in Cass County, according to a report by the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Cooper was traveling east on Redfield Street when he was blinded by the sun and failed to stop at the signed intersection, crashing into the vehicle of Szmborski, who was traveling through the intersection at the time.

Both parties were wearing seat belts and alcohol is not a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
