A Dowagiac woman was hurt Tuesday night when the snowmobile she was riding on collided with a vehicle at Orchard and West Telegraph streets.

Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson said just after 7 p.m. Feb. 5 his officers, responding to a reported injury accident, found Kimberly Phillips, 18, of Dowagiac, hurt while riding as a passenger on a snowmobile northbound on Orchard Street.

The operator of the snowmobile failed to halt at the intersection stop sign and was struck by a westbound sport utility vehicle driven by Ronald Reeves, 59, of Dowagiac.

Reeves and his passenger, Robin Reeves, 53, of Dowagiac, were not injured, nor was the snowmobile operator.

Phillips was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Niles by Pride Care EMS for treatment. Phillips was treated for her injuries at Lakeland and released.

The 25-year-old male subject identified as the operator of the snowmobile was arrested at the scene by Dowagiac police for operating an off-road vehicle (ORV) with a suspended license.

He was also cited by officers for the misdemeanor offense of operating an ORV on a public roadway and a citation for disregarding the stop sign on Orchard Street.

He was lodged at the Cass County Jail, Cassopolis.

Dowagiac police worked with the City of Dowagiac Fire Department, Pride Care EMS and Pokagon Band Tribal Police to handle the incident.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Helmets and seatbelts were used by the subjects involved.

Dowagiac police want to remind residents that Michigan law (MCL 324.82119) makes it illegal, with certain exceptions, to operate a snowmobile on a public roadway. Other Michigan laws limit the operation of snowmobiles near residential areas, during certain times of day and regulate various other aspects of operating a snowmobile. Residents are asked educate themselves to those laws before operating any snowmobile or ORV.
