Dowagiac senior Brett Scanlon, who is one of the top kicking recruits in the state of Michigan, will play in the 33rd MHSFCA East-West All-Star Game June 22 in Allendale.

The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) announced rosters for the All-Star Game recently. The game will be played at Arend D. Lubbers Stadium on the campus of Grand Valley State University.

Forty-four players were selected for each team.

Scanlon, who owns nearly all of the kicking record at Dowagiac, is listed as a punter on the West roster.

He is not the only Wolverine Conference player to be selected. Vicksburg defensive back Colin McCaw also was named to the squad. Scanlon is southwest Michigan’s lone representative.

Scanlon is the first player since since Ryan Casey in 2007 to play in the All-Star Game.

“I’m happy for him, for all the hard work and time he has put in,” Dowagiac coach Mike Stanger, who was named the Regional Coach of the Year by the MHSFCA said. “He’s worked hard over the four years. I truly believe he is one of the best kickers in the state of Michigan.”

“It took me by surprise,” Scanlon said. “I haven’t gotten anything in the mail in quite a while now that recruiting is closing down. I haven’t gotten anything in the mail that exciting.

“Actually my dad was the one who brought the mail in. I was really excited. It kind of made me feel that all the hard work I have put in over the years has paid off. It’s a great opportunity to go up there and represent Dowagiac, coach Stanger and the rest of the football team.”
