The Cass County Board of Commissioners made a motion during its last meeting to appoint current interim administrator Louis Csokasy to the full-time position, though his interim contract would not be terminated until March 8, 2013. Today’s meeting is scheduled to approve Csokasy’s contract, but some residents and commissioners are left asking, “What’s the rush?”

The Cass County Board of Commissioners should not make any definitive decision on a county administrator until after the general election Nov. 6.

In the upcoming election less than a month away, Cass County’s board will be reduced from 15 commissioners to seven, which has many members pitted against one another.

Due to redistricting completed by the state, some commissioners have already been voted out of their race for one of the seven coveted seats, yet they will be given the opportunity to vote to hire Csokasy.

The county has had trouble in the past with finding a permanent administrator, a position Csokasy was once in the running for but was initially turned down.

Now that the elections are nearing, the county seems to be rushing toward hiring Csokasy before more than half of the board disappears.

Is there a fear that with only seven commissioners, Csokasy wouldn’t be appointed or his contract would not be approved?

The county should wait to make a decision on county administrator until the Nov. 6 election has passed, especially if Csokasy is contractually obligated as the interim administrator until March.

It’s fair to both the county and its residents.
