A Niles 11-year-old is proving it’s never too early to start writing that first book.

Sophie Campbell, a sixth-grader at South Bend’s Resurrection Lutheran Academy, recently had her debut book, “Brave. A Book About Courage,” published by IWA Publishing Services.

The children’s book contains approximately 50 poems across 73 pages. Campbell wrote about her family and friends, experiences she’s had and experiences she wants to have. All center on the themes of bravery and courage.

Campbell got the idea to write a book while doing writing exercises last year while she was being home schooled.

“I always wanted to write a book,” she said.

The process took about eight months. Campbell hasn’t told her friends about the book yet, despite it being published last month.

“I want them to find out about it on their own,” she said. “I’m not sure what they’ll think about it.”

Campbell’s mother, Donna, is proud of Sophie’s accomplishment.

“When I read it I was shocked at the depth of some of the poems. She’s only 11,” Donna said.

With her first book behind her, what’s next for Sophie?

“I want to be on the “Ellen” show, singing,” she said.

Sophie will be signing books at Better World Books, 118 E. Washington St., Goshen, Ind., from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and The South Bend Chocolate Company, 122 S. Michigan St., South Bend, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12.

The book can be purchased on Amazon.com.
