Doubles teams lead Bobcats to victory

Host Brandywine swept the doubles flights from Dowagiac at Plym Park Thursday.
The Bobcats split the singles flights to score the 6-2 non-conference tennis win.
Brandywine defeated the Chieftains at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, while Dowagiac defeated the Bobcats at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.
Chance Smith defeated Jon Robinson 6-0 and 6-1 and Tanner Bourdon defeated Austin Jackson 6-0 and 6-1.
Marc Tyrakowski defeated Michael Robbins 6-3 and 7-5 and Ethan Dussel defeated Lukas Hoffman 7-6 and 6-2.
The strength of the Brandywine team so far this year has been its singles players. But Bobcat coach David Sidenbender has been pleased with recent changes to the doubles pairings.
“I was really happy with the doubles,” he said. “We made some changes the last couple of weeks to make them stronger and they came through today. They are getting used to playing with each other and I was real happy with the way they played today.”

Dowagiac was playing back-to-back matches and coming off its first victory in more than a year. New coach Sonny Swartz is pleased with the way the team is progressing.
“We’ve improved so much over this last month that I’m impressed,” Swartz said. I can’t believe it. We will just keep competing and go into the regional with our heads high and keep trying. That’s all I can ask for.
“He just picked up a racquet in June and now he’s won two matches and he’s been competitive. He’s a hard worker and I can’t asked for a better guy.”
Sidenbender also had an eye toward the regionals Thursday.
“This was big for regionals and regional seeding,” Sidenbender said. “They were big for each flight to win and for us to just get confidence. We graduated 10 from last year, so each match we play gives us a little bit more confidence and experience and that means everything in the world.”
