Enrollment is holding steady at Niles Community Schools, according to preliminary student count figures released late last week by school officials.

As of Thursday (the third day of enrollment), Niles had 3,703 students enrolled for regular education in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

Niles had 3,717.5 students on the third day of enrollment last year.

Supt. Richard Weigel said Niles wouldn’t have a full student count available for a few weeks. The first official count is in early October. School districts receive state aid based on student counts taken in the fall and spring.

“Currently, I am satisfied with our numbers and the way things are looking,” Weigel said. “Our regular education numbers appear to be near what they have been in the past. Our alternative education numbers are increasing, but we will not have a full student enrollment count for another few weeks.”

The preliminary count of 3,703 doesn’t include students participating in the W-A-Y Niles program, W-A-Y Forward program, adult education program or home school program. Weigel said the district expects to have 120 students enrolled in W-A-Y Niles, an increase of 60 students from last year. The district also anticipates having around 20 students in W-A-Y Forward.

When accounting for all students, Niles had an enrollment count of 3,870 in both the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012.
