Dowagiac girls place in pageant

The 40th Miss Southwest Michigan Scholarship Program and 22nd Miss Southwest Michigan Teen Scholarship Program were held Saturday at Lakeshore High School Performing Arts Center. The theme was “Broadway.”

Elizabeth Allen, the 19-year-old daughter of Lois Allen of Coloma, is the 2013 Miss Southwest Michigan. She is a sophomore at Southwestern Michigan Collage. She also received the Quality of Life Award. Her scholarships total $2,100.

Shannon Burkett, the 19-year-old daughter of Kelly and Leslie Burkett of Dowagiac, received the Ticket Sales Award, Salute Ad Sales Award, Peoples Choice Award, Recruitment Award, Miss Congeniality Award, Speech Award, Photogenic Award, Modeling Award, Talent Award and the Academic Award. Her scholarships total $550.

Keneisha La’Rae, the 21-year-old daughter of Kenneth Harrington and Ella Harrington of Coloma, received the, Car Wash Fundraiser Scholarship, Leadership Award and Community Service Award. Her scholarships total $300.

Miss Southwest Michigan Teen

Serina French, the 16-year-old daughter of Vonda French and Ronald French of Benton Harbor, is the 2013 Miss Southwest Michigan Teen. She is a junior at St. Joseph High School and also received the Community Service Award. Her scholarships total $1,100.

First runner-up is Theresa Rose Wuerfel, the 13-year-old daughter of Ken and Julie of St. Joseph. She also received the Salute Ad Sales Award and Car Wash Fundraiser Scholarship. Her scholarships total $470.

Dakota Trinka, the 17-year-old daughter of David and Davie Trinka, received the People Choice Award, Parade of Homes Fundraiser Scholarship, Speech Award, Modeling Award, Talent Award, Leadership Award, Quality of Life and Academic Award. Her scholarships total $1,052.

Sheila Burkett, the 16-year-old daughter of Kelly and Leslie Burkett of Dowagiac, received the Ticket Sales Award, Recruitment Award and Miss Congeniality Award.

Her scholarships total $150.

Alexandria Haney, the 17-year-old daughter of Jason and Therese Haney and Michael and Michelle Flecher, received the Photogenic Award. Her scholarships total $100.

Heather Hammond and Gabrielle Leonard received the Non Finalist Award. Their scholarships total $100 each.

The New Miss Southwest Michigan Teen will make a decision in six months after working with the Southwest Michigan Scholarship Program Prep Team on if she would like to continue on to a state and national level of her choice.

The Southwest Michigan Scholarship Program focus is on teaching the youth of southwest Michigan leadership, community service, respect and honor.
