Lila Blough, 15, of Edwardsburg showed the grand champion breed overall with her Californian rabbit, “Champ,” at the 161st Cass County Fair.

Taking care of rabbits is a favorite pastime for 15-year-old Lila Blough of Edwardsburg, who was busy all spring and summer traveling to rabbit shows at Michigan State University and to local shows before fair time this year.

A member of Mechanicsburg 4-H Club, Lila showed the grand champion breed overall with a Californian rabbit at the Cass County Fair.

She raised the rabbit in her barn on May Street. Her rabbit is black and white and is named “Champ.”

She also won Californian Best of Breed and Reserve Best of Breed with Californians and Best of Breed with a Standard Chinchilla and Best Any Other Breed with a Holland Lop.

Now that the fair is over, Lila is planning what breeds she will raise in 2013 for next year’s fair. She and her mother, Laura Blough, breed and raise the rabbits and will start their breeding in January with about 30 rabbits.

She is a sophomore at Edwardsburg High School and is busy getting ready for school to start this year Sept. 4. She will participate in girls’ basketball and softball.
