Defending champs get top seeds

Defending champions Dave Negron and Sue Watson received the top seeds for the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament’s singles action this weekend at the Dowagiac Middle School courts.

A total of nine men registered to compete in the singles competition, which will begin with a first round match Friday at 6 p.m.

David Brogen will take on Ethan Dussel with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Negron Saturday morning.

Last year’s runner-up, Marc Tyrakowski, received the second seed and will face Michael Robbins in the quarterfinals. Seventeen-time champion Larry Watson received the No. 3 seed and will face Sonny Swartz, who was named Dowagiac’s new boys and girls tennis coach Monday.

The final quarterfinal match will pit No. 4 seed Jim Darr against Brian LaPorte.

Quarterfinal matches for the men and semifinal matches for the women will begin Saturday at 8 a.m.

In the women’s bracket, Kaley Brogen will face Alyssa Robbins in the opening round Friday night with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Sue Watson.

In the other semifinal, No. 2 seeded Alex Watts will take on Sydney Foote.

Both the mens and womens finals will be played Sunday.
