Three people were injured Oct. 1 when a motorist illegally passed a vehicle on Cassopolis Street, hitting a Fed Ex truck.
Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that at about 2:15 p.m., his office was called to investigate a personal injury crash that occurred on Cassopolis Street near U.S. Highway 12 in Mason Township.
It was found during the investigation that a northbound vehicle driven by Illinois resident, 60-year-old Charles Ingersol, illegally passed a vehicle waiting to turn left. In passing he struck a southbound Fed Ex truck driven by an Indiana resident, 48-year-old Stephen Delieghter.
Delieghter did attempt to avoid this collision and subsequently crashed also into a tree. Both Delieghter and his passenger, Indiana resident David Trethewey, 38, were injured and transported to the hospital.
Trethewey was treated and released by Elkhart General Hospital; however, Delieghter was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend and is currently in stable condition.
All others were treated and released at the scene.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash, and it is believed that all parties except those injured were wearing safety belts.
Assisting the sheriff’s office were Porter Fire Department, Porter Ambulance, Edwardsburg Fire Department and Edwardsburg Ambulance.
This case remains under investigation.
