DOWAGIAC – Campers, staff and volunteers of Camp Civitan were surprised, when motorcyclists drove in.

“Campers came from everywhere to see what all the noise was about and to welcome us,” Said one member of the motorcycle club. Immediately, the camp turned into a hive of smiles and hugs, and a buzz of conversation.

The United States Patriots Motorcycle Club of Michigan were there to present a check, from their annual auction for Camp Civitan, to Phyllis Davis (co director) and Audrey Sperling (co director).

Pictures were taken of the campers with the U.S. Patriots, for the campers to take home with them.

Individuals and community businesses donate motorcycle apparel, helmets, auto accessories, tools, handmade quilts and blankets, gift certificates and many more items to the USP M/C. These items are then auctioned to raise money, for these special campers.

Proceeds from the auction, along with any cash donations are then given to Camp Civitan to help the continued growth of this camp; for these loving individuals.

“With all the help of all our supporters, our annual donation has grown each year,” said Sperling.

This year, the USP MC’s third annual “Patriotism Bash” is July 24, 25, 26 with the Camp Civitan Charity Auction, Saturday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m. This event, just north of Marcellus, also includes: primitive camping and live bands both nights, food and beverages, 50/50 and raffles, bike games, prizes and much more.

Camp Civitan is a four-day outdoor camping experience, in June, for mentally and physically impaired adolescent and adult persons. The local Civitan clubs recruit and sponsor campers, helping financially as needed.

Activities planned for the campers include nature hikes, swimming, fishing, boating, outdoor games, crafts, campfire sing-a-long, and a Saturday night dance. Camp goals include improving self care skills, develop a positive attitude toward our environment, develop responsible citizenship, improve social skills, and increase self-confidence.
