Eddies sweep Niles in baseball, softball

EDWARDSBURG – Host Edwardsburg picked up a pair of one-run victories over Niles in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

The Eddies (14-6) won the first game 3-2 and then completed the sweep with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

Wade Smous drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the first game for the Eddies.

Evan Zimmerman went the distance for Edwardsburg, scattering four hits and striking out eight. He also picked off a runner.

Mike Kempton had two hits for the Eddies. Zimmerman, Zach Thompson, Kyle Slack and Dan Witucki each had a hit.

Riley Robson took the loss for the Vikings, who got a homerun from Kevin Gross.

In the nightcap, Edwardsburg scored three runs in the second and third innings to account for its offense.

The Eddies finished with five hits. Trevor Milliken, Witucki and Smous all drove in runs.
Smous started for Edwardsburg and worked two and a third innings before giving way to Ethan Moreno who picked up the victory.

Taylor Campbell took the loss for the Vikings.

Gross had a double in the second game, while David Garner had a pair of singles.

Edwardsburg softball
EDWARDSBURG – The Edwardsburg softball team, an honorable mention pick in Division 2 swept a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Niles on May 6.

The Eddies (17-7) defeated the Vikings (5-13) 5-2 and 5-4.

Ashley Tackett won the opening game as she scattered six hits.

Aubrey Coquillard doubled and Victoria Hurst homered for Edwardsburg.

Hurst finished with two hits.

Heather Daniels and Sarah Cramer both had two hits for Niles.

Andrea LaPlace, with relief help from Tackett, earned the victory in
the second game.
Coquillard and Allison Koontz each had two hits for the Eddies.
Ashley Evans doubled for the Vikings, who also got two hits from Hannah Porterfield.
