The 1896 Atlas has been reprinted by the Cass County Historical Commission and is currently available for purchase at the Museum of Southwestern Michigan College, the History Branch of Cass District Library in Cassopolis and the Edwardsburg History Museum.
This is the first time this atlas has been reprinted and the Edwardsburg History Museum graciously loaned the commission its copy for the project.
In addition, St. Denys Foundation donated funds and Kinko's of South Bend, Ind., did the reproduction and printing.
This over-sized, spiral-bound book contains an index and shows property lines and the names of recorded owners.
There are 29 pages of maps of the townships, villages and cities and four index pages in the atlas.
This is the third atlas reproduced by the Historical Commission.
The other two are the 1872 Atlas of Cass County and the 1860 Map of the Counties of Cass, Van Buren and Berrien.
All three atlases sell for $15 each.
Last year the commission developed and printed an historic Cass County map. Art work for this colorful 24-inch by 36-inch map was created by Margaret Hunter of Dowagiac.
An abbreviated history of the county appears on the backside of the map, which is suitable for framing. Copies of these maps will be offered to fourth grade classrooms for use in teaching Michigan history, libraries and the municipalities within the county.
The map is available for $10 at the property description office in the 1899 Cass County courthouse, the Museum at Southwestern Michigan College, the Edwardsburg History Museum and the History Branch and main branch of Cass District Library.
The Historical Commission is hoping to reprint the 1882 Waterman and Watkins History of Cass County this next year.
This popular book has been reprinted twice already by the commission and just about sold out.
