For the first time in four years, Dowagiac walked away from a match with Edwardsburg victorious.
The Chieftains edged visiting Edwardsburg 1-0 Thursday afternoon in a non-conference battle.
Brian Edgerly's goal in the 60th minute gave Dowagiac the hard-fought victory.
Edgerly's goal came on a cross with 14:52 remaining in the match and just cleared the outstretched hand of a leaping Edwardsburg goalkeeper and just under the cross bar.
Williams noted that it was a very physical match and that both teams played well.
Dowagiac's last win against the Eddies came in 1999 in the district tournament.
The Edgerly goal came as a result of Williams telling his team that they need to cross the ball more.
Dowagiac was outshot by the Eddies, 20-10. Goalkeeper Davey Moran stopped all 20 shots according to the Dowagiac charts.
Moran had several key stops on the Eddies in both halfs to keep the match scoreless.
Edwardsburg's best chance of scoring came with 21 minutes remaining in the match on a direct kick following a Chieftain foul. The ball however sailed over the Dowagiac wall and well over the goal.
Vs. Buchanan
Buchanan's soccer team came out on top in a Lakeland Conference match Monday night at Edwardsburg.
The visiting Bucks stole a 2-1 decision with a goal in the last minute of the game. Buchanan is now 4-4-1 while Edwardsburg is 3-3.
Doug Summer scored with 35 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory for Buchanan. Jose Gonzales scored Buchanan's first goal, just 11 minutes into the second half. Ryan Warner scored Edwardsburg's only goal, off an assist from Jeremy Watkins, in the 25th minute of the second half.
Josh Wahlstrom had 28 saves in goal for the Bucks while Tony Schmitt and Josh Montgomery each had four saves for the Eddies.
