PAW PAW — The Dowagiac varsity wrestling team went 1-1 on Wednesday at the Paw Paw Quad.

The Chieftains defeated Comstock 40-36 and fell to Gull Lake 47-29.

“I was extremely hapy with our effort on the mat from everybody,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We had in the Comstock match Rey Vega come back and pinned a kid that beat him earlier in the year and Matt Lyle pinned a kid that beat him by five or six points earlier in the year.”

Picking up two wins for the Chieftains were Vega, Ryan Smit, Ben Luth and Carl Grant.

“In the Gull Lake match we won 4-3 in matches that were actually wrestled,” Alward added.
