The Berrien County Road Commission will submit state and federal grant applications for the replacement of six county-owned bridges, including Ferndale Street Bridge in Niles Township. The board of commissioners voted to support the grant applications Thursday.

The Ferndale Street Bridge is 61 years old and carries an average daily traffic of 150 vehicles.

John LaMore, 12th District commissioner, said the county has pursued grant funding for that bridge in the past, but it is very competitive.

“It’s one of those processes where there are 1,000 bridges in the state but there is only enough money for 20,” he said. “The worst case scenarios get the money.”

The road commission has attempted to repair culvert holes, maintained the stream channel and upgraded the warning signs for the structure, but the commission still believes it should be replaced.

The other county bridge projects seeking funding are Elm Valley Road Bridge in Weesaw Township, the Date Road Bridge in Lake Township, the Bailey Road Bridge in Pipestone Township and the Nye Road Bridge in Galien Township.
