Dowagiac freshmen now 6-1 after topping Devils

The Dowagiac freshmen football team improved to 6-1 Thursday night at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field with a 39-14 win over Gull Lake.

Derek Stark ran for 133 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Chieftains, who rebounded from their first loss of the season.

Brett Scanlon added 40 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Anteyon Russell had 70 yards and a touchdown on just two carries.

Defensively, Scanlon had an interception, while Brendon Murray, Logan Polomcak and Tyler Hill all recovered fumbles.

“Our kids really did a nice job of rising to the challenge tonight coming off a tough loss last week,” Dowagiac coach Tony Scaccia said. “I couldn’t be any more proud of our effort level and commitment.”

Dowagiac led 14-6 at halftime, but was outscored 30-6 in the second half as visiting Gull Lake posted a 36-20 victory.

The Blue Devils used a kickoff return to open the second half to spur the comeback.

“We are going to work hard and look to next week,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said.
