Chieftain cross country teams have rough day

PAW PAW – The Dowagiac boys’ and girls’ cross country teams didn’t have the best of days on Thursday at the Paw Paw Invitational.

Portage Central won the girls’ and girls’ titles, each with 47 points.

Mattawan was second in the girls’ race and Otsego third.

The two reversed finishes in the boys’ race.

Taylor Smith of Otsego was the girls’ overall winner with a time of 19:44.

Kelsey Cleveland was Dowagiac’s top finisher as she was 39th with a time of 28:02.

Samantha Mathews finished 43rd, Amanda Hassle 45th, Kayla Yakim 46th, Kristina Bunn 47th and Rebecca Luth 49th.

Corrine Kasper and Michala Froehlich were 34th and 40th respectively in the junior varsity race.

Alex Standiford of Mattawan was the boys’ overall winner with a time of 16:41.

Chris Gantt earned a medal with his 20th place finish and time of 18:38.

Brandon Wilson was 41st, Ryan Daly 44th, Tony Brooks 46th and Matt Ernzen 48th.
