Kevin Blair could not choose between music and art.

So he didn’t. He embraced both.

The Niles jack-of-all-trades has been performing his religious folk music throughout the area for years, while painting on the side.

But his art will take center stage today at Niles District Library with the opening of his exhibit, which will run through Feb. 23.

Blair’s show, titled “Photo Conglomerate,” is a series of complex computer-generated works.

Created with a program called Pixelmator, most of the works are a series of distorted images, offering his take on the ills of society.

Distorted photos of politicians, public figures, combined with other images offer his take on the current state of America.

“Much of it is very surreal and allegorical,” Blair said. “The basic message is about the state of the world we live in.”

While much of his art focuses on the complexities and negative aspects of society, a few of his works, in contrast, dwell on the simplicity in nature.

“There is other stuff that’s lighter,” he said. “God’s creation is still maintained through all the mess. There’s some comic relief in there too.”

Blair says his art and music “go hand and glove” with an image inspiring a song or a song leading to a piece of art.

But his creativity doesn’t stop there, as he also dabbles in writing poetry and prose and producing music videos.

“I’m a pretty versatile guy, I guess,” he said.

Also on display at the Niles District Library are the ceramic sculptures of Kari Black of Edwardsburg, who teaches ceramics at the South Bend Museum of Art.
