Enjoy fall color at Fernwood

The fall color at Fernwood is spectacular right now, and these beautiful sunny days have made it even more vibrant. The color should peak by this weekend, making the arboretum, garden and river views warm and bright. Bring your camera.

Tree ID class — Sunday, 2 to 3:30 p.m.        

Learn how to identify basic tree groups by silhouette, buds, leaves and fruit. Participants will start out in the classroom and continue on a walk through Fernwood’s Arboretum. Dress for walking the trails. Fee $15 (members $12). This class fulfills 1.5 hours of Michigan Master Gardener continuing education credits.                                                                      

Railway Garden morphs into ‘Haunted Express’

Spiders and bats and black cats! Ghosts and goblins and funny pumpkins! The Fernwood railway garden has become a hauntingly fun place for the last two weeks of October. Kids will enjoy a Halloween scavenger hunt throughout the gardens and Halloween decorations in the railway garden. The scariest thing is that the railway garden will close for the season Oct. 31.

‘Nature Saplings: Leaves’ — Friday, 1 to 2 p.m.

Children ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 visiting with an adult will enjoy an introduction to nature. At this session, learn many fun facts about leaves, such as how to recognize them by shape, why leaves change colors in the fall and much more. Dress for walking the trails. Class size is limited; call ahead. Fee $5 per child/adult pair (members $4 per child/adult pair).

Yoga in the gardens — Saturdays and Thursdays, noon to 1:30 pm 

Deirdre Guthrie of Yoga Glow in Three Oaks leads our yoga classes held Saturdays and Thursdays through Nov. 27 from noon to 1:30 pm. (No class on Thanksgiving, Nov. 25.) Classes will be held outside as weather permits. Deirdre has been teaching yoga since 1998 in San Francisco, Chicago and southwest Michigan’s Harbor Country. Fee $10 (members $8).

Farmers’ Market in Buchanan to End Saturday

Don’t forget to look for Fernwood at Buchanan’s Farmers’ Market Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

‘Climate Change & Sustainability: Global & Regional Impacts’ — Tuesday, Nov. 9, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Fernwood and the League of Women Voters of Berrien & Cass Counties are co-sponsoring an evening on the environment with Rosina Bierbaum, dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment, professor of natural resources and environmental policy, University of Michigan. Bierbaum will discuss “Climate Change & Sustainability: Global & Regional Impacts.” The lecture will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a plated dinner prepared by Fernwood’s Executive Chef Tim Carrigan. The cost is $27 per person, and Fernwood will accept reservations through noon on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Seating is limited for this lecture.
